 A.    English Language for Education

The English Language Education Department at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), is one of the prominent departments dedicated to preparing future educators in the field of English language teaching. The department aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become professional English teachers, particularly in Indonesia

B.    Vision and Mission of the Department

VISION

The vision of the English Language Study Program is: “To become an English Language Education study program that is innovative, independent, Edu-entrepreneurship, and leading in the development of English Language Education knowledge in Southeast Asia by 2026”

MISSION

The vision is realized through the following six study program missions, which will be achieved in stages from now until 2025.

1.     Organizing competency-based education programs that produce English language education staff who are professional, of high quality, of commendable morals, of high integrity, and of noble personality.

2.     Carrying out educational research programs, especially English language education and linguistics.

3.     Organizing community service programs in the form of training, workshops, social service, teaching and other upgrading to support human resource development and education.

4.     Organizing English language education as an effort to master a global communication tool to explore and transform knowledge and facilitate international relations.

5.     Building management and institutional capacity in a sustainable manner and in line with the demands of current developments.

6.     Improve coordination, communication and cooperation with related agencies, both at regional, national and international levels intensively and extensively.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

General purpose: Organizing English language education programs that have high relevance to the dynamics of local, national and global society.

Special purpose: Produce a professional Bachelor of English Education who is able to teach English in accordance with developments in science and technology.

C.    Key Features

1. Curriculum:
   
   • The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical and practical aspects of English language education, covering areas such as linguistics, literature, language teaching methodologies, and classroom management.
   • Students also gain knowledge in pedagogical principles, curriculum design, and educational psychology, all essential for teaching English effectively.
   • Practical teaching experiences, such as microteaching and teaching internships, are embedded in the program to provide students with hands-on classroom experience.
2. Focus on Language Proficiency:
   
   • The department places a strong focus on enhancing students’ proficiency in English, which is vital for future English teachers.
   • Courses like Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Reading are designed to build fluency and accuracy in English.
3. Research Opportunities:
   
   • Students are encouraged to conduct research on English language teaching, linguistics, and related fields as part of their final thesis requirement. This helps develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in educational contexts.
4. Qualified Faculty:
   
   • The department is staffed by experienced lecturers with expertise in various fields of English language teaching, including TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), applied linguistics, and literature.

   • The English Education Department actively seeks to collaborate with international institutions to enhance learning opportunities for students, including exchange programs, guest lectures, and joint research projects.
