In a significant step toward enhancing academic collaboration, Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) and the University of Rhode Island (URI) convened a virtual meeting to discuss the continuation of their successful Split-Site Program. The meeting brought together key representatives, including:

  • Professor John Kirby – Dean, College of Environment and Life Sciences, University of Rhode Island
  • Dr. Brook Ross – Director, Indonesia Education Partnership
  • Professor Hizir – Director, Postgraduate School, Universitas Syiah Kuala
  • Dr. M. Ikhsan Sulaiman – Vice-Director for Academic Affairs, Postgraduate School, Universitas Syiah Kuala
  • Dr. Kismullah – Secretary, USK Split Site Program and Lecturer, English Education Department
  • Reza Syah – Representative, BPSDM Aceh

Dr. Kismullah, a lecturer in the English Education Department, has played a pivotal role in coordinating and the USK Split-Site Program. As the program’s secretary, he has been instrumental in facilitating communication between USK, URI, and funding bodies such as BPSDM Aceh. His contributions have ensured the program’s smooth operation and success, highlighting the importance of cross-departmental collaboration within USK.

Achievements of the Split-Site Program

The Split-Site Program, initiated between URI and USK, has already seen significant success. Between 2023 and 2024, 15 postgraduate students from USK completed their Master of Environmental Sciences and Management (MESM) degrees at URI, funded by BPSDM Aceh. Impressively, two graduates have continued their academic journey, pursuing PhD studies in hydrology at URI with scholarships provided by the university.

Additionally, Nani Safuni, a lecturer from USK, is currently undertaking a PhD in nursing at URI, further strengthening the partnership between the two institutions.

Future Plans for Collaboration

Discussions during the meeting focused on the potential for a new cohort under the Split-Site Program. At the national level, USK and URI plan to coordinate with Bappenas and LPDP to explore funding opportunities. Locally, collaboration with the Aceh provincial government, DPRA, and BPSDM Aceh is being intensified to secure support for the program.

The Split-Site Program exemplifies USK’s commitment to expanding global academic opportunities for its students and faculty. Dr. Kismullah’s dedication and leadership continue to play a crucial role in ensuring the program’s ongoing success.
